Here’s a follow-up on my earlier piece about Christopher Buckley–the son of conservative thinker William F. Buckley, Jr.–who last week endorsed Barack Obama for president of the United States. Apparently, that move didn’t sit too well with fellow some conservatives, especially those who work for William F.’s old magazine, The National Review. So, Christopher announced today that he was leaving the publication, effective immediately. Here’s part of his reasoning:

“While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for,” Buckley wrote.

“Eight years of ‘conservative government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlements programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terri Schiavo case,” he also wrote.

Indeed, sometimes parting really is such sweet sorrow. Speaking of parting, Buckley’s now-former National Review colleague, Kathleen Parker, thinks that John McCain should drop Sarah Palin from the ticket. And for this, NRO readers sent her messages saying they wished Parker’s mother had aborted her. Nice. Video here.
